A PHILOSOPHY ON WORK
Most people don't want to think about systems or processes. They just want things to work. I like finding the places where work is harder than it should be — the process that depends on one person knowing all the tricks, the problem that keeps coming back, the question that always needs an expert — and making them simpler and calmer. I call that the Land of Boring. It isn't about avoiding change. It's about not being surprised by things that shouldn't be surprising, so people can spend their time on the work that matters.
Stable beats clever
The clever fix you have to babysit costs more than the simple one that just works.
Make the answer boring
If the same question always needs an expert, build a way for anyone to answer it.
Fix the cause, not the symptom
If the same problem keeps coming back, fix the process or system behind it instead of getting better at cleaning it up.
Small steps, often
Big changes go better as a series of smaller ones you can test and learn from along the way.
